Stop using MACC as a political tool, warns Latheefa

"Yes, nothing stops just because someone came into power. We only stopped if the case does not go beyond the initial complaint.

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Latheefa Koya has warned individuals against using the anti-graft body as a political tool.

She said this following a statement by the opposition that MACC should be fair in investigating corruption cases even if it involved people from the ruling government.

“MACC for a long time was used as a political tool, people lodge reports just to get at each other.

“We strive to be professional and we do not want to be used for this platform.

“We are going to investigate if the report has a basis. Just because there is a complaint, does not mean there is a case,” she told reporters after a courtesy call to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal on Wednesday (Sept 11).

Latheefa was responding to a recent article quoting Sabah opposition leader Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, where he had expressed hope that a corruption case involving Shafie in 2017 will be reviewed.

Jeffrey had also called for the reopening of the investigation of a land sale case involving Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda).

“Yes, nothing stops just because someone came into power. We only stopped if the case does not go beyond the initial complaint.

“And we must understand we have instances of reports lodged based on political motive. Of course, we will look back at what was the basis of the report in the first place,” she added.

Latheefa said most often than not, someone would make a report to MACC just to tell the media “I have done it”.

“If the opposition feels there’s a perception we do not look into their case, maybe they have to look back to the way they did their complaint – is it with substance, is it just a complaint or did they just make a statement in media, or did they immediately come to us with information.

“If you have a complaint it doesn’t matter who you are. If you have information come and give us, we will look into it,” she added.

Meanwhile, when asked if they were investigating any high profile cases in Sabah, she said there were such cases but that it was too soon to disclose.
