KOTA KINABALU: The presence of state Opposition leader Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan welcoming Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the airport is raising eyebrows here.
His critics are questioning his motive but Dr Kitingan maintained that he was there as he was hoping the Prime Minister would have an announcement about Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“So we went with the hope of some good news but ended up very disappointed, ” he said yesterday.
Dr Mahathir was here on Tuesday for a one-day visit.
Apart from him, Opposition Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai also shared similar thoughts.
The government, he said, could not continue to give the excuse of “no money to meet Sabah’s request”.
“Let’s hope for some concession in the form of bigger development allocations when Putrajaya tables Budget 2020 next month in lieu of its failure to deliver the 20%
royalty and the return of the 40% revenue derived from the state, ” he said.
Opposition SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said he was curious to know what Dr Mahathir discussed with state leaders on Tuesday.
“It is only right if the Sabah government tells us what was discussed during the meeting, ” he said.
Prior to Malaysia Day, there had been several news reports quoting, among others, DAP state leaders saying that there would be good news announced on Malaysia Day.
However, state Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Junz Wong who is from Parti Warisan Sabah, said Sabahans should think positive.
He said many of the promises made especially on MA63 were in the pipeline but could not be revealed yet.
“We have been waiting for 56 years. Give the government a bit of time and take a leap of faith with us. Good things are coming, ” he said.
