KUALA LUMPUR: The Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) should not be abolished, says Mohamad Sabu.
The Defence Minister said the Act should be further improved to prevent abuse of the law.
“Sosma does not need to be abolished, it has to be improved from time to time because Sosma can be misused.
“Last time, Maria Chin (PH-Petaling Jaya) was detained under Sosma for being involved in the Bersih (2.0),” he told reporters when met at the lobby on Tuesday (Oct 15).
He said this when asked on the use of Sosma in the recent nationwide crackdown on Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)-linked elements.
Two DAP leaders – Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan and Seremban Jaya assemblyman P. Gunasekaran – were among 12 people arrested under Sosma over their alleged links to LTTE.
Several leaders have criticised the move to use Sosma.
However, Mohamad said that was up to the police.
“I am confident that the police will be careful in handling this case,” he added.
